Pests In Commercial Kitchens

Commercial kitchens are very tempting places for pests. With the food, the heat and the moisture, in many ways a commercial kitchen is the perfect environment for them. If you do not take the necessary steps, you could see your kitchen become overrun by pests like cockroaches, rats, ants and flies. Here’s how to beat the pests and stop them from becoming a problem.
Look for Signs of Pests
The first thing to do is to always be alert to the signs of an infestation. This can include seeing live pests, their faeces or scratch marks and gnaw marks. Look out for these on a daily basis, but also carry out a regular inspection where you go into more detail and check every area of the kitchen.
Using a flashlight and a mirror, search the hotspots in the kitchen. These include:

  • Damp places like sinks, pipes, dishwashers and drains
  • Anywhere that food debris can accumulate, including storage areas, underneath equipment and in the corners
  • Storage rooms where clutter builds up, which are good places for pests to hide
  • Areas of heat, especially underneath and behind stoves, freezers and dishwashers
  • Cracks and holes where pests can get access to the kitchen, especially around pipes and in the wall
  • Equipment used a lot in your premises, including commercial kitchen canopies, commercial kitchen extractor fans & commercial kitchen extraction systems.
Treat Problems Immediately

Whether you spot signs of pests during your regular inspection or while you are working, make sure you take action immediately. There are various treatment options available, and you may want to treat the problem yourself or hire a specialist depending on how large the infestation is. Treatment options include:

Traps | Insecticides | Sprays | Dust | Baits

Be very careful because you do not want to contaminate the food in the kitchen. And while you may be able to deal with a small infestation yourself, if the problem appears to be large or growing, you may want to call in the professionals.

Pest Prevention Tips
  • Of course, the best way to avoid pests in your kitchen is to prevent them from appearing in the first place, so make sure you practice good pest prevention.
  • If you see cracked tiles on the walls and floor, either seal the gaps or replace them to prevent pests from getting into the kitchen.
  • Make sure you store food in containers that are pest proof. Jars and cans are ideal because they cannot be chewed through.
  • Rubbish should be managed properly because it can attract pests. Isolate it from preparation and storage areas, and dispose of it properly, which means far away from the premises.
  • Create a sanitary environment in the kitchen, which involves dealing with spills quickly and always cleaning up promptly. Drains should be clear of waste, counters should be wiped clean regularly & good kitchen ventilation is a must.
Testimonials for CK Direct
Even though the Canopy was not a regular size, that didn’t seem to faze the estimator at CK Direct Ltd. Turnaround time and price were extremely competitive compared to the other extraction companies...
